Colloidal Oatmeal: The Most Underrated Skin Soother

March 17, 2026

Some ingredients are flashy. Colloidal oatmeal is not. It is quiet, humble, and one of the best studied skin soothers we have.

Avenanthramides do the heavy lifting

Colloidal oatmeal is simply oats milled very fine. Its standout compounds are avenanthramides, a group of polyphenols found in oats. In the research, avenanthramides calm inflammatory signaling in skin cells, in part by dialing down the same NF-kappaB pathway that shows up in a lot of skin irritation. They are also studied for supporting the skin barrier, which is the layer that holds moisture in and keeps irritants out.

This is one of the rare cases where I can point to formal recognition. Colloidal oatmeal is an FDA recognized over the counter skin protectant ingredient, and there are clinical studies on personal care products that contain it. It earns the respect.

Why it anchors our Psoriasis Soothing salve

In our Psoriasis Soothing salve, colloidal oatmeal works with astragalus, neem, nettle, and star anise, blended into a rich base of shea and castor oil. The oatmeal brings the soft, soothing, barrier supporting quality. The other herbs add their own calming character. It is made for skin that feels dry, tight, and in need of comfort.

If you have a diagnosed skin condition, please keep working with your dermatologist. A salve like this is meant to support comfortable, moisturized skin, and it works best as part of the bigger picture.
