What Is a Salve Used For? How to Use One, and When

A salve is herb-infused oil thickened with beeswax into a soft balm you spread on skin. The oil carries the plant’s compounds, and the beeswax holds that oil in place so it keeps working where you put it instead of rubbing off on your sleeve.

What a salve is used for

The everyday jobs first:

• Dry, rough skin. Hands after dishes or garden work, elbows, knees, and heels.
• Minor scrapes and scuffs. A skin-soothing salve like our Boo-Boo Butter earns its spot in the kitchen drawer this way.
• Chapped lips and wind-burned cheeks in cold weather.
• Cuticles and cracked fingertips, which drink up an oil-and-wax layer better than a watery lotion.
• Tired muscles, when the salve is built with warming botanicals for exactly that.

How to apply a salve

Scoop a small amount with a clean, dry finger. A pea-sized dab covers both hands; body heat softens it as you rub it in. Give it a minute to settle before touching fabric, since the oil layer is the whole point and you want it on skin, not shirt.

Dry fingers matter more than they sound. A salve contains no water and no preservative, and it stays shelf-stable precisely because nothing wet ever gets into the tin.

Where not to use one

Keep salves away from the eyes and away from broken or bleeding skin unless the product is made for that purpose. Skip aromatic salves on infants’ faces. And do a small patch test with any new salve before using it broadly, the same as you would with any new skin product.

How long a tin lasts
