About this salve
Capsaicin is the compound that makes cayenne hot, and it binds a receptor called TRPV1, the same one your nerves use to report actual heat. That is why chilli feels hot when nothing is burning. On a sore muscle it is doing the warming half of the job.
Peppermint runs the other way on TRPM8, the cold receptor, which is why this can feel warm and cool at the same time. Arnica is the traditional one for aches and bruising, and eucalyptus rounds it out. Cayenne wants a careful hand, so start with less than you think and wash your hands after.
How to use it
Apply to sore muscles after a workout. Wash your hands afterwards, keep it well away from eyes, and patch-test first.
Keeping it
A salve has no water in it, so it needs no preservative and keeps roughly nine to twelve months.
This is a topical salve and the warmth you feel is a receptor response rather than a change in temperature. It is not an anti-inflammatory drug and it is not a treatment for an injury.
