About this salve

Holy basil has real research behind it, and every bit of that research is about taking the plant internally. A salve does not do that. What a salve on your wrists and the back of your neck does is scent and touch and a deliberate pause, which is a genuinely different mechanism and worth naming rather than blurring.

St John's wort is the one that makes the oil turn red. Crush a fresh yellow flower and you get red on your fingers. The compound is hypericin, it sits in the dark dots along the petal edges, and it comes out into warm oil over a few days. Hops and rosemary and sage round it out.

How to use it

Rub into wrists, temples, or the back of the neck when you want the pause.

Keeping it

A salve has no water in it, so it needs no preservative and keeps roughly nine to twelve months.

This is a topical salve and it is not a substitute for taking any of these herbs internally, which is where their research actually sits. It is scent, touch, and a ritual.
